An IoT fire detection system connects detectors, on-site alarms, gateways, communications and a central platform. It covers detection, notification, device-health monitoring, incident acknowledgement and maintenance—not merely a smoke detector connected to the internet.
The four-layer BLUTA architecture
01 / DETECT
Collect smoke, heat, carbon-monoxide and device-health signals according to project design.
02 / CONNECT
Use low-power wireless networks, gateways and resilient communications appropriate to the site.
03 / VERIFY
Distinguish alarms, pre-alerts, faults, low battery, tamper and offline states.
04 / RESPOND
Route information to designated stakeholders and retain a traceable event timeline.
More than hardware
BLUTA can integrate suitable sensing devices, gateways, LoRa or other low-power networks, mobile communications, monitoring software, escalation rules and maintenance workflows. The architecture is designed to work with owners, property managers, consultants, registered fire-service installation contractors and relevant service providers.
Hong Kong regulatory context
Fire Services Department Circular Letter No. 3/2026 sets out a specified acceptance framework for IoT FDS and portable fire extinguishers in certain target buildings of six storeys or below. It is an acceptance framework for a system category—not automatic approval of every brand, product or project.

Frequently asked questions
Does IoT FDS replace every existing fire-service installation?
No. Applicability depends on legislation, Fire Services Department requirements, building conditions and the project’s professional design.
What happens if the external network fails?
Appropriate design should keep essential on-site alarms independent of the cloud, while remote communications may use redundancy and store-and-forward recovery.
Is BLUTA a detector or a platform?
BLUTA is a fire-safety IoT integration architecture and monitoring platform that can connect appropriate project components.
