An Internet of Things Fire Detection System connects fire detectors, local alarms, wireless gateways, communications and central monitoring. In addition to alarms, it can report device-health states such as faults, offline status and battery level.
What does a complete system include?
- Multi-criteria sensing selected for the project’s fire-related signals.
- On-site sounders or other warning devices for people at the premises.
- IoT gateways connecting field devices with designated monitoring systems.
- Low-power wireless and mobile communications with risk-appropriate redundancy.
- A central platform showing alarms, faults, locations and follow-up status.
- Defined service and maintenance workflows with accountable owners.
Why device health matters
A fire-safety system must be available when it is needed. Persistent offline devices, weak batteries, tamper or gateway communication failures reduce practical protection if nobody sees and resolves them. IoT FDS therefore supports both alarm transmission and continuous maintenance visibility.
Hong Kong’s 2026 framework
Fire Services Department Circular Letter No. 3/2026 introduced a specified framework for qualifying IoT FDS in certain target buildings of six storeys or below. Project eligibility and technical compliance must be assessed from the official documents.

- How are low battery, offline, fault and tamper states monitored?
- How is wireless coverage surveyed, tested and recorded?
- Who receives alarm and maintenance notifications?
- Which qualified professionals and contractors are responsible for the project?
